		<description> In collaboration with fuelfor

A design exploration of the waiting experience in healthcare.
We all know how it feels to wait. Waiting is part of our everyday life; we wait for the bus, we wait for a friend to arrive, we wait our turn to be served in a shop. Sometimes we enjoy the wait, it gives us a chance to breathe and reflect. At other times it's a disruption to our routine that leaves us frustrated, stressed or simply bored.

Waiting is a consistent pain point at different stages of a health care experience. We wait for a consultation or to obtain our test results. Waiting in a hospital or clinic can be especially difficult as we could be in pain, feeling anxious about our health condition, or confused by a procedure we do not understand. Waiting in healthcare is rarely positive.

Many healthcare systems are working hard to reduce waiting times as a means to improve efficiency and perceived service quality. But as health services around the world are increasingly overstretched, waiting becomes an inevitable part of every healthcare journey. So how can we improve the quality of a waiting experience in healthcare?

Project Process Overview

Insights
Synthesising our data from secondary desk research and fieldwork observations and interviews with service users and healthcare providers, we defined a set of key insights that relate to the experience of waiting for a consultation in a healthcare setting.
Each insight into the current experience is described on a separate card, the title of each card opens up a particular opportunity area to improve the experience of waiting. A trigger for ideation of solutions.
The insights capture the physical, emotional and spatial aspects of the waiting experience. By combining them and mapping them to time and the process of waiting provided a clear innovation framework for the project.

Patient Journey
From arrival and registration at a clinic or hospital reception, all the way through to medical consultation and departure, the waiting experience is broken into key stages that impact the overall waiting experience. consideration was given to people having to wait while their loved one consults the doctor. Each stage was colour coded to indicate the pace of activity at that point, a faster pace with a more intense colour. A time icon indicates the typical relative duration of each stage.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/1701415/3.jpg" width="670" height="474" width_o="1359" height_o="962" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/1701415/3_o.jpg" data-mid="8380394"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Modus
Modular furniture system that can be adapted to support different types of activities, people and facilities; elements can be reconfigured by healthcare provider as a service evolves. Moveable arm rests and a choice of different density cushion pads allow people to create their own physical comfort zone. Wheelchair users and children in strollers have designated waiting space alongside their loved ones. Soft design qualities communicate comfort, but not at the expense of hygiene, with specialist materials finishes ensuring safe surfaces. Active and passive air cleaning is achieved through integrated ventilation and carefully chosen plants. A queue management system provides displays at each end of the seating unit, reassuringly near to people as they wait.

Tableau
When you sit at a table its surface naturally creates a personal space around you. Tableau is a communal table for waiting rooms that provides social and private space for people to read , write, relax or socialise.
Integrated lighting, storage and queue management displays create a dedicated area in which people can prepare or debrief after a consultation. Service staff can also use the table as an informal work space or a place for conversations with patients and loved ones.

		<description>Interpersonal relationships (such as couples or employer-employee) sometimes force us to do things we do not agree with, things we would prefer to do at a different time or even things we would do differently.
Being able to give in becomes, therefore, essential in order to socialize successfully. However, it is also good to be aware of our limits and detect when the situation should be stopped.

This object helps to visualise how much we have given in to the same person. It consists of a ceramic piece, a valve and a balloon. The user needs to assign the object to a specific person and blow into the balloon every time the user considers he or she has given in to that person.

The bigger the balloon gets, the more patience you are losing... How much are you willing to give in? Could you eventually explode?

Quant estàs disposat a cedir? Acabaràs petant?</description>

		<description>This project is about Compact and Prefabricated Living. Due to a dramatically increase of the property prices, designers have started to try to provide more affordable solutions to people by understanding the house as a mass consumption product. By taking that approach to the housing market, designers aim to reduce costs by standarising construction processes.

There are other conditions that have changed the way people used to live not too many years ago. The traditional family twenty years ago used to live in one or two houses all their life. Nowadays, due to an increase of divorces(75% of the marriages in some European contries) and due to different work requirements, people tent to live in several houses before they find the house where they plan to settle.

This process of changing your living space has been considered the most stressing situation a person can be put through after a medical operation, and statistics say that 42% lost sleep, 6% needed time off work, 4% had panic attacks and 2% had to see a doctor during the moving process*.

My proposal is a range of furniture that facilitates the moving process, lets you choose the furniture that you prefer even when you share a space and allows you to easily move your furniture with you when you move out.

This collection of furniture would be sold off the shelf by halves -so in a shared environment you could decide which half you prefer. These halves could be pluged to other halves in order to create complete objects.

		<description>I focused on people who, for one reason or another, can only use one of their hands (accident, walking-stick, etc). For this purpose, I tried to break down the act of making a meal with only one hand. I focused on the tools that one-handed people need, how they prepare the work space, how they take the dishes to the table, how they cut, peel, fill in a bottle of water. I also focused on all the actions which can be easily unnoticed by abled people but very difficult to perform for disabled people. The aim is to design non-stigmatising objects which can help both, able and disable people.

		<description>"The key to OCD is realising that despite their compulsions they have to fit in with the world, not the world change for them, if they want to be well with their condition"
Chez Payne-Annetts
Practice Manager at the OCD Centre

This project comprises five prototypes to help OCD sufferers. The objects do not attempt to facilitate the sufferers' life but rather to 'spike' their condition. The direct confrontation of their condition helps the sufferers to take control of their anxieties rather than to be dominated by them.

Some of the prototypes were tested during a five-days intensive course at the OCD Centre by eight sufferers and two therapists. Their feedback helped refine the products.

OCD TAP
The tap is fitted with a small device to harmlessly change the colour of the water to make it look 'contaminated'. The compulsion to repeatedly cleanse hands is confronted.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/CNV00002.JPG" width="670" height="448" width_o="1840" height_o="1232" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/CNV00002_o.JPG" data-mid="1294081"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/CNV00006.JPG" width="670" height="448" width_o="1840" height_o="1232" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/CNV00006_o.JPG" data-mid="1294082"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/CNV00008.JPG" width="670" height="448" width_o="1840" height_o="1232" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/CNV00008_o.JPG" data-mid="1294089"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/CNV00013.JPG" width="670" height="448" width_o="1840" height_o="1232" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/CNV00013_o.JPG" data-mid="1294090"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

OCD stickers
A set of transparent 'desk object' stickers to be stuck on a work desk. The stickers are arranged chaotically. 'Order' sufferers will be tempted to place items (eg. pen, stapler) on the matching sticker. If they do, the desk top appears chaotic; if they don't, nothing is in the 'right' place. It's a lose - lose situation and the compulsion must be confronted.

OCD tape
This tape uses a familiar hazard graphic to communicate unfamiliar and irrational warning messages. It is used to delineate 'dangerous' territory. The messages 'spike' anxiety in the OCD sufferers which must be actively confronted.

OCD cutlery
The cutlery is 'poison tipped'. The toxic pink tips clash with the notion of natural, healthy food and create a compulsion dilemma for the sufferer that needs to be confronted.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/_DSC3529.JPG" width="670" height="445" width_o="2048" height_o="1360" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/_DSC3529_o.JPG" data-mid="1294148"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/_DSC3530.JPG" width="670" height="410" width_o="2048" height_o="1254" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/_DSC3530_o.JPG" data-mid="1294151"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/_DSC3537.JPG" width="670" height="374" width_o="2048" height_o="1144" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299419/_DSC3537_o.JPG" data-mid="1294155"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

OCD book
The book has perforated pages to permit the sufferer to tear each page out once it has been read. The desire to repeatedly turn back and reread the last section of the previous page is confronted.

Indication clothing
Managing clothing to stay hygienic, comfortable and safe can be a challenge for elderly due to their reduced movement, memory, mobility, sight and sense of cold.
This idea offers garments that indicate frequency of usage and wear through simple visual feedback, and enlarged narrative graphics.

Rehabilitation clothing
Elderly may struggle to perform regular rehabilitation and general mobility exercises due to a lack of understanding of the need to stay active, boredom with routines leading to non-compliance, feeling unsafe performing exercises on their own. Physiotherapists and rehab specialists encourage elderly to maintain an exercise routine at home, but need to be able to adapt care plans according to capability as people age, get ill and their movement deteriorates.
This idea offers elderly a simple, fun and safe way to perform rehab and mobility exercises in the home wearing this garment. It also offers care givers the opportunity to modify and tailor exercises for patients in a simple effective way by moving pockets around the garment using a flexible system.

Myway
Families struggle to confront and effectively address difficult issues such as those related to aging loved ones and lifestyle changes that impact the family. They often struggle to identify the options they face as well as feel a sense of control over their decision-making.
This idea is an interactive, visual tool that helps people discuss sensitive subjects and work out possible future scenarios in order to plan with effectiveness and reassurance. The kit could also be used by other stakeholder groups such as: human resource managers discussing retirement and pension options with their employees, social workers facilitating decision-making together with the families they support or clinical professionals discussing care options with their patients and their families.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299270/26_elderly5.jpg" width="619" height="322" width_o="619" height_o="322" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/25695/299270/26_elderly5_o.jpg" data-mid="1293688"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

upgrAID
1 in 3 elderly fall and injure themselves in ways that can lead to hospitalisation, a rapid decline in physical and mental condition and potentially even death. For this reason some elderly are afraid to venture out of their home for fear of falling. Ironically, staying mobile and active also contributes to healthy aging. Existing hip protection products are stigmatising and suffer from non-compliance over time. Advances in materials technologies offer new functionalities that can be incorporated into clothing. d3o is one such smart material that offers protection from impact.
This idea combines a service and a product - a clothing alteration service that is offered in a rehab clinic or outpatient health center with a hip protection soft product that can be integrated into any overcoat to offer fall protection in a comfortable, non stigmatising, flexible way.

		<description>Is a collection of three objects which try to keep users physically active by creating new relationships object-user-user-object.
These new relationships are not unidirectional anymore – relationships in which users are the ones who demand from the object and the object obeys.
The pieces of furniture in this collection do anything but facilitate what users want. They force users to perform a physical action in order to make them function. These actions keep users active.
Trying to find a way around the system also implies an effort. In this case, however, it implies a physiological effort.

Table
This working desk has the drawers opposite to the users. Every time users need to access the drawers, they are forced to stand up and walk to get what they need from the drawers.

Lamp
This lamp always needs someone holding it. If it is in a vertical position, the bulb switches on, whereas in a horizontal position it switches off. It forces users to perform a little but constant effort, which does not let them to relax completely.

Hanger
Placed several meters above the floor, this hanger transforms the wall in a little mountain that needs to be climbed every time users have to get their jacket.
